Smartphones are pretty nice, they can do a lot of awesome stuff like playing games or browsing the internet. But they also have some limitation like a small screen display which makes it pretty much hard to see what’s going on at a distance. Wouldn’t it be nice if you can make your apps/games display on the big HDTV screen you have? Thankfully, you can, by using a display adapter that connects your smartphone to your television. There are many display adapters on the market and they come with different shapes and sizes, with various features and price range. Here we take a look at one of the most prolific video adapter around, the Belkin Miracast Video Adapter.

What Does it Do?

belkin miracast video adapter

The Belkin Miracast Video Adapter is an excellent video display adapter by Belkin, chock-full of features you would want from a video adapter. This gadget allows you to link practically any devices, such as a windows laptop, tablet, smartphone to your HDTV, cloning the display. By using this device you can play movies, photos, apps, games or practically anything your smartphone/laptop and make it show up on the paired HDTV too. It has native support for Windows 8.1 and smartphones/tablets running on Android 4.2 and up.

Package and Appearance

The Miracast Video Adapter has a compact design. At 8 inches long and 5 inches wide, it looks like a USB flash drive and fits snugly right into your HDTV’s HDMI port. It has a black finish and weights around 5.6 oz.

The package comes with the adapter, a usb power cable, an hdmi extension cable and a quick installation guide. Unfortunately, the HDMI extension cable is pretty short and isn’t much of an extension. It does help if you can’t plug the adapter directly into the HDMI port, but your adapter will be jutting out in the air only supported by the HDMI extension cable if you do so. As such, I recommend not using the HDMI extension cable.

Installation and Use

The installation is pretty easy, you just plug the adapter to the HDMI port of your TV, making sure to plug the USB power cable too. Then you just go to your smartphone or laptop’s display settings and pick connect to other display and it will work. After a few seconds of syncing your HDTV will mirror your smartphone/tablet’s display, so you just play your movies/run your games from your device and it’ll show up on the HDTV.

That’s it, there’s no messy driver installation, no app installation, it just works out of the box. What’s amazing is that it can stream in full HD 1080p resolution and it’ll also stream the audio along with the video too, so it’s perfect for playing movies.

Latency Problems?

Now one thing I had a problem with was the latency. Depending on the device, there’s a delay of up to a second or two in the HDTV display. This makes it pretty hard to use in games. But after researching further, I found out that other wifi devices in the network are interfering with the connection. After going into the settings and switching the frequency band (from 2.4Ghz to 5Ghz) the lag pretty much went away.

Also, I found out that although most android 4.2 devices support Miracast, some of them just doesn’t have enough cpu power to stream the display without delay. So if you’re having problems with the latency first change the frequency band and then look at the supported devices list to make sure your device is in it.

Belkin Miracast Video Adapter Compatibility Check

This devices is compatible with a lot of devices which includes Google Nexus 7 to Samsung Galaxy S5. The official Belkin site has published a list of devices which are supported by this adapter. You can also check a list of supported devices here (http://belk.in/mira1234). But to cut it short, pretty much every popular smartphone on the market is supported such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 to S5, Google Nexus 4, 5 & 7, HTC One or Sony Xperia. You even have e-book readers like the Kindle Fire or gaming devices like the nVidia Shield being supported. On the laptop side, pretty much any laptop running Windows 8.1 and above is supported but for best results, it is recommended to use laptops that have the intel Wi-Di chip in it for minimal latency.

Pros:

  • No installation needed, just plug and play.
  • Small compact size.
  • Can stream 1080 videos with ease.
  • Easy to use.

Cons:

  • Requires an external power cable.

  • Interferes with other wifi devices on the same frequency band.
